Kane & Lynch - Dead Men Mobile Game
Eidos is serious about expanding its mobile presence, what with the recent releases of Tomb Raider and Pandemonium for 3D-enabled handsets. But what about mobile gamers with handsets capable of only 2D graphics? And what about the sub-set of that group that wants to play an action game about a mercenary and a madman?
Eidos has that group covered, too.
Kane & Lynch: Dead Men is based on the upcoming console game of the same name, starring two desperate men forced into an uneasy partnership. Kane is the lone survivor of a shattered merc operation. Lynch is a certified psychopath, sentenced to death for the murder of his wife. These are not good men, but Dead Men hints at the possibility of redemption for either of these twisted souls.
The mobile shooter runs players through 38 levels across five different scenarios, such as a bank or nightclub mission. You control one of the men while the other follows, offering cover and support. Each anti-hero is a weapons expert, so expect plenty of firepower, including an uzi, shotgun and an assault rifle. Lynch has a sniper rifle he can use to pick off certain targets, such as switches or distant shooters before they draw a bead on Kane.
We'll have a few review of Kane & Lynch for mobile when the game bows on handsets, likely around the November release of the game on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. In the meantime, check out all nine screens of the game in action.

It's all indicative of the detail that Virtua Tennis Mobile Edition packs into its diminutive frame, but it's not at the expense of baffling the newcomer. You really can be up-and-running, virtual racket in hand, in five short minutes. It's that well-pitched.
Central to this is the control system, which makes the game simple enough to play with one thumb. You move around the court with the thumbstick and hit the ball by depressing it, or hitting '5' on your keypad. While you can lob with '0', you won't often need to, leaving you to play with just the one button.
That doesn't restrict the range of your shots, though, as you can add after touch to influence the ball's flight. Pressing left or right after hitting it directs the ball in the relevant direction, while pressing up or down imparts spin. Press up to send a powerful top-spin shot sailing towards the baseline or press down to play a sneaky back-spin shot or, depending upon where you are on the court, a drop-shot.
If you're rankling over this apparent lack of control and the involvement of the game in your shot selection, don't: it feels almost as natural as playing the game for real and doesn't spoil your enjoyment one jot.
It enhances it, in fact, as the game is as fast and fluid as a Federer serve. The simplistic controls mean you don't need to worry about pressing myriad buttons in order to achieve the shot you want, leaving you free to concentrate on your position on court, which makes a big difference to how successful your shots are.
In short, Virtua Tennis Mobile Edition is a brilliant game that flatters at the same time as it challenges. The AI players are well-graded, so you start off with easier foes before advancing onto more hardened veterans, and you never feel as though you're not in with a chance of winning.
That alone is enough to keep you coming back for more and we've not even mentioned the training mode that helps you improve your virtual self, the shop where you can spend your prize money on new clothes, kit and doubles partners, or the one-off Vs. mode where you can play any of the 20 fictitious in-game opponents.
About the only thing missing from Virtua Tennis Mobile Edition's game is a two-player Bluetooth mode. But, to be honest, it's not a major failing, not when the game is already as much fun to play as it is. And besides, you'll become so engrossed your friends and family will soon forget about you anyway.

You don't get many elephants wandering across cricket pitches mid-innings. At least, I don't think you do. Not being a Sky subscriber, I rely on Test Match Special on the radio for cricket coverage, and the old buffers there have never broken off from discussing Mrs Miggins from Derbyshire's cake to point out a pachyderm on the pitch.
That's just one way Freddie Flintoff All Round Cricket differs from more serious cricket sims, such as Player One's Michael Vaughan's Cricket 06/07. Animals regularly hove into view when you're getting ready to strike – and what's more, you're rewarded for hitting them. The WWF wouldn't approve, but we most certainly do.
Anyway, this game is based on a series of one-on-one battles between all-rounders – you play Freddie, and your cartoon opponents are not-so-subtly disguised versions of famous cricketers: 'Mad *** Shane' the Aussie spinner, anyone?
You have to bat against their bowling for 24 balls, and then switch. Whoever scores the most runs wins, but if you're bowled or caught three times, you're out.
And it's not about squeezing away quick singles. This is a hoick-fest, where the aim is to batter as many sixes and fours as possible. When batting, an indicator tells you where the ball is going to pitch, while its colour tells you whether it's a straight ball, spinner or seamer.
Pick your spot, press '5' to build up your power, and choose a direction to launch your shot (or get bowled out like an idiot).
Meanwhile, bowling involves stopping a slide to choose what kind of ball you're after from the three mentioned above, and then moving the indicator to place it. Both batting and bowling are easy to get to grips with, although as you unlock better opponents, the increased speed makes batting harder.
The matches take place in unorthodox settings – a park for England, a city street for India, a desert scene for South Africa, a beach for the West Indies, and the outback for Australia. A key part of the game is scoring bonus points by thwacking the ball into objects like cars, boats and buildings.
Meanwhile, if you brain an animal – this is where the elephants come in – you get a Super Shot next go, which scores double points. You can also build up to get a Super Shot by hitting lots of sixes. It works well, and brings an element of targeting to the thumpfest.
Game-wise, you can play a Quick Match against any of the in-game players, although to get the full range you'll have to unlock them by playing the World Tour, which is three separate trophies that are increasingly hard to win. Survival Mode, on the other hand, has you batting against all 12 opponents in order, with each getting three bowls at you but you only having one wicket. Finally, there's a Bluetooth multiplayer mode to compete against a friend.
The game looks polished, with bold cartoon graphics, and fluid animation. It's a sparkling attempt to create a fun and involving mobile game from a sport that isn't ideally suited to the pick up'n'play dynamics of mobile. Whether you're a hardcore cricket fan or a casual observer hoping England will win the Ashes, this is top notch.

And nothing rocks quite like rock itself.
Digital Chocolate has chosen to recognise this fact with Rock City Empire, its follow up to the much-lauded Night Club Empire. More costume change than sequel, Rock City EmpireThe Sims with the colourful exuberance of Bust-a-Move, and challenges you to transform a drab street into a throbbing clubland in just a hundred days.You start with ownership of a dive called 'The Snake Pit.' Although a few revelers inexplicably populate the small dancefloor, the stage is bare and the surroundings are bleak. Armed with a small budget, you have the option to deck the venue with lights, expand the floor, distribute posters, employ a go-go dancer, and make a catalogue of other small improvements.
More importantly, you can hire one of four bands to play onstage, performing either '80s rock, punk, rockabilly, or new metal. The ever-changing makeup of the audience, whose tastes are indicated by the clothes they wear, lets you know which of these bands to set strumming.
Of course, the music is significant and Rock City Empire puts in a fair performance. Each of the four bands has its own cheerful tune, and while each of them is passable and appropriate to its genre, all are perfectly dispensable when the need for silence arises.
As the money starts rolling in, your world begins to open up. You can buy bigger equipment, hold glitzy events, and deploy flash stage effects so that when the hundredth day comes, Rock City is a thriving, strobing, pulsating Mecca.
In real terms, these 100 days represent about an hour of solid play, or a few days of fleeting bus-stop forays. Your success is measured by fame points, and although you are free to keep playing once you reach the end of your time, your score is fixed.
Starting again, meanwhile, enables you to challenge the ghost of your own best performance for the greatest number of fame points, and this is a surprisingly credible incentive to replay.
Fame points are the backbone of the game. Not only do they allow you to measure your success, but reaching a few benchmark numbers unlocks new equipment, events, and other venues.
With fame points come the winding queues, the moshing partygoers, the swivelling lightshows, and the opportunity to break into hugely profitable guitar solos, which demand a mention.
Taking a now-familiar dance game format, the object of these solos is to hit a sequence of notes on a scrolling fretboard. The occasional opportunity to play a solo, signalled by the filling of an energy bar, provides a welcome break from the hands-off isometrics of the management, and inexplicably injects vast sums of money into your coffers.
To be strict, in fact, the giddy bounty this subgame yields represents a failure of balance, cleaving the game into a pre-solo era, characterised by prudence and deft decision-making, and a post-solo era in which money is never an object and victory is, frankly, too easy.
It is this kind of bum note that keeps Rock City Empire from the A-list of serious management sims, but it doesn't detract from the joy of the game's more successful elements.
The fast pace, the variety, and the visible impact of your decisions in the increasingly lively Rock City all more than make up for any economic implausibility.
It may not be deep, but is fun, addictive, and it even – just about – rocks.
